Carivu is a diagnostic device that uses transillumination technology to detect cavities in teeth. It is a small, hand-held device that a dentist or hygienist uses to shine a light through a tooth, which allows them to see the inside of the tooth without the need for x-rays or drilling. The light is able to pass through healthy tooth structure, but is blocked by areas of decay, which appear dark on the Carivu's screen. This allows the dentist to detect cavities in their earliest stages, when they are still small and can be treated more easily. Carivu is especially useful for detecting cavities in hard-to-see areas such as between teeth, or in the back of the mouth. It is also useful for patients who are x-ray phobic or have medical conditions that make it difficult to take x-rays.
