An endodontist is a dental specialist who has received advanced training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of dental pulp and the surrounding tissues of the tooth. They focus on performing procedures related to the inside of a tooth, such as root canals, apicoectomies, and treatment of dental trauma. They use special instruments, such as microscopes, to access and treat the inside of the tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels are located. They are also trained to diagnose and treat pain or injuries to the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the tooth. They also perform retreatment of previously treated teeth and surgeries of the tooth and surrounding tissue, in addition to regular endodontic procedures. They are able to perform complex procedures that general dentists are not able to perform.
