DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) are two different degrees that are awarded to dentists upon graduation from dental school. Both degrees represent the completion of the same level of education and training and are recognized as equivalent by the American Dental Association (ADA) and most states. The main difference between the two degrees is the name of the degree and the name of the school that awards it, DDS is awarded by Dental schools that are traditionally associated with medical schools and DMD is awarded by Dental schools that are traditionally independent. Graduates of both programs have the same rights and responsibilities as licensed dentists and are able to provide the same level of care to their patients.
